Our Sustainable Practices

"Be what you want the world to be" - Gandi

Fishes Cafe is committed to the highest standards of Sustainability best practice. We are passionate about our Fish & Chips and most of all about Straddie!

To that end we:

  • Recycle our used cooking oil by giving it to one of our Fishermen suppliers who manufactures bio-diesel to run his boat and landcruiser to deliver fish. This is full circle recycling.

  • We aim to recycle our bio-dynamic waste to compost which will then be used to fertilise the various gardens around Point Lookout.

  • We are negotiating with the Redland City Council to provide a commercial recycling of our PET, cardboard and glass bottles.

  • While we wait for the Council, we recycle all our cardboard in our van & transport it to the recycling centre at the local tip. Neighbouring businesses also use this facility to recycle cardboard.

  • We separate and recycle our glass bottles and cans

  • We source as much produce as possible from local business suppliers, thus reducing "Food Miles" and contributing to the local Stradbroke Island economy - Straddie Butcher, Rufus King Seafoods - between them they employ over 20 Straddie people!

  • We supply only recycled packaging for our takeaway meals.

  • We have installed low flow taps to all our sinks and water devices.

  • Replacing halogen light bulbs with low wattage alternatives.

  • We have installed the latest technology refrigeration appliances.

  • We Sponsor Events and Community Groups on Straddie with cash and services.

  • Encourage bicycle riding around Point Lookout.
